GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's basketball team held its first official practice of the 2017-18 season on Monday, Oct. 9, in the Bennett Gymnasium inside the Kress Events Center. We caught up with head coach
Linc Darner on his thoughts and feelings surrounding day one.
UP NEXT: Green Bay will see its first live game action on Monday, Oct. 30, exactly three weeks after its first practice. The Phoenix will host Ripon at the Resch Center for a 7 p.m. tip. Pomp's Tire will sponsor this year's schedule magnets, with the first 1,000 fans in attendance receiving a magnet.
KEEPING COHEN
As announced by the team last Friday,
Sandy Cohen III received a waiver from the NCAA and will now have 1 1/2 years left in a Green Bay Phoenix uniform. Cohen III, a native of nearby Seymour, will play his redshirt-junior season this year starting on Dec. 21 against Bowling Green and will play his redshirt-senior season next year in 2018-19.

SELECTED SIXTH
The Horizon League released its 2017-18 preseason poll and awards last week, with Green Bay coming in at 6th in the poll, voted on by media, coaches and sports information directors. The Phoenix did not have any players receive preseason All-League recognition. GB finished 3rd in the Horizon League last year, owning a strong 12-6 record, but boasts a near entirely new roster in 2017-18.
Khalil Small,
David Jesperson and
Kameron Hankerson are the only players to return for Green Bay who appeared in a game last season. Cohen III has now been with the team since December 2016, but sat out last season after transferring from Marquette mid-season.
FRESHMEN FIVE
RP40 will feature a host of new faces this year, with five of those faces enjoying their first year on a college campus. Darner and his staff graduated six seniors last year, and watched two other contributors transfer with a third player being removed from the team. All those departures led the Phoenix coaching staff into a heavy recruiting season, which saw five freshmen sign an NLI to play at Green Bay.
PJ Pipes,
Trevian Bell,
Manny Patterson,
Hunter Crist and
Will Chevalier comprise a heavy freshmen class, which most likely will be asked to contribute heavily at times this season.
JUCO JUMP
Sukhjot Bains and
TJ Parham join RP40 after spending last season at the JUCO level, where each averaged double figures and played key roles on their teams. Parham averaged 15.4 PPG at Wabash Valley College in Illinois and Bains averaged 13.4 PPG and 8.0 RPG last season at Northwest College in Wyoming.
