GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Toronto Raptors announced on Sunday, July 9, the signing of Green Bay alumnus Alfonzo McKinnie '15 to a multi-year contract with the team. McKinnie has started in all three games for the undefeated Raptors at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, and is coming off a strong season in which he was named an NBA G League All-Star.
McKinnie, a native of Chicago who played two seasons at Green Bay from 2013-15, averaged 14.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 30.5 minutes in 50 games last season for the Windy City Bulls of the NBA G League. He reached double figures in 41 of those games, and notched his season-high of 29 points against Sioux Falls on March 4. The 6-foot-8 guard-forward was named to the 2017 NBA G League All-Star Game in New Orleans and scored 16 points in 22 minutes of action.
"Getting an NBA contract is the greatest blessing I've received thus far. This is something I've always dreamed about and now that it's happened, I'm very grateful for the opportunity and I can't wait to get to Toronto," said McKinnie.
He won a silver medal for USA Basketball at the 2016 FIBA 3x3 World Championship in Guangzhou, China. McKinnie, at 24 years old, has been enjoying quite a bit of success as a pro, also spending time in Luxembourg and Mexico where he averaged over 15 points per game and 7.5 rebounds.
McKinnie will head with the team into training camp this fall and will hope to make the Raptors official NBA roster. In his last outing on Monday night, he registered a double-double by scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Raptors made the NBA Playoffs last season as the No. 3 seed, defeating the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round in six games before losing to the eventual Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers in four games in the semifinals. The team is coached by Dwane Casey and is led by All-Stars Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, who will both return to the team in 2017-18.
