Green Bay Volleyball Team Posts NCAA Top-25 Team GPA for 2016-17

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that 822 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season, with Green Bay being recognized as one of those teams along with landing a spot in the Top 25 among all NCAA Division I team GPAs. This marks the 14th time since 2001 that Green Bay has received the Team Academic Award and the third time in three seasons under head coach Sean Burdette.

The team posted a 3.6776 cumulative team GPA this past year, with eight student-athletes landing on the Horizon League Honor Roll for the spring semester. Lydia DeWeese, Megan Powers and Taylor Totka each received All-Academic honors from the League as well, recognizing both athletic and academic accomplishments.

"The 2016-17 academic year has been outstanding both on the court and in the classroom for the Phoenix volleyball team. I am pleased that the AVCA has yet again given our program the Team Academic Award for excellence," said Burdette. "This recognition would not be possible without all the hard work, dedication and hours put in by our student-athletes, our coaching staff and last but not least, Mike Kline our Student-Athlete Academic Coordinator. Thank you to all that have impacted this team. Green Bay was one of seven Horizon League teams to receive the AVCA All-Academic Team award, and was one of four teams to land in the Top 25 as well."

The award, which began in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, celebrating its 25th year, is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but two, while amassing a 532 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 822.

The Phoenix will get its 2017 season underway unofficially on August 19 with an intrasquad scrimmage at the Kress Center before opening its season in the Eastern Illinois University Panther Classic on August 25-26 with three matches in Charleston, Ill.
