GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The historic seventh win in a row came relatively easy for the Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team on Saturday afternoon, cruising past Youngstown State (7-14, 1-7 HL) in straight sets at the Kress Center. The streak of seven-consecutive match wins in a row is the most in the Division I era (first season was 1988) at Green Bay, and the most since the team won nine in a row back in 1987. With the record-breaking win and Cleveland State's loss at UIC, GB (12-8, 7-1 HL) now sits all alone in first place in the Horizon League at 7-1 and moves to a perfect 3-0 at home this season as well.
Green Bay 3, Youngstown State 0
The opening 2-0 lead for the Phoenix in the first set set the tone early, thanks to a pair of kills from
Anna Eaton and
Taylor Wolf, but it was the run that ensued following a YSU 8-6 lead that gave the Phoenix the momentum. With
Austyn Everingham on serve, GB went from down 6-8 to up 11-8, and eventually 13-9. Again with Everingham serving later, her team went from down 17-18 to up 23-18. GB eventually sealed it 25-19, with T. Wolf and
Jessica Wolf adding four total kills late.
The second set was never competitive, with GB taking a dominating 17-4 lead. YSU scored the opening point, but the Phoenix then controlled all phases of the game from that point, eventually putting away the Penguins 25-13.
That momentum carried over into the third set, with GB jumping out to a 5-1 lead and never trailing in the set. YSU made it 20-16 late in the third set, but GB scored the final five points to secure yet another win. It marks the fourth time in HL play that GB has won in straight sets and eighth time total this year.
Taylor Wolf led the Green Bay attack once again, recording 14 kills and 11 digs for another double-double. She hit .313 in the match and also registered three blocks. Senior sister
Jessica Wolf added seven kills and a pair of blocks as well. It was a balanced attack at the net for GB, with
Ashley Sledge and
Alexandra Zakutney each adding eight kills, with Sledge swinging on a .429 clip with four blocks.
Anna Eaton added six kills and freshman
Shannon Coughlin came in to pick up a kill and aid in the winning effort as well.
Defensively, three players recorded double-digit digs, led by
Vanessa Buman's 17. T. Wolf had 11, while Everingham finished with 11 digs.
Maddie Yoss controlled the Phoenix once again, finishing with 38 assists and a couple of kills.
