Seven Tabbed to Softball All-Horizon League Teams

5/10/2022 11:00:00 AM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Tuesday morning the Horizon League announced the 2022 Softball All-League Awards. Green Bay is represented in all but one category, with seven different Phoenix garnering awards.

After finishing the regular season at the top of the Horizon League leaderboards in batting average (.398), slugging percentage (.815), on base percentage (.519), OPS (1.334), and walks (24), Alicia Peters was named the Horizon League Player of the Year. Peters is the first in program history to receive the award. The grad transfer from Buffalo had one of the best seasons in program history, breaking the single-season record for home runs with 12. The record was previously set by Danielle Peerenboom's 10 homers in 2010. If the season ended today, the Chico, Calif. native would also break the program's single season slugging percentage and on base percentage records.

Peters, Jadin Justman, and Tiffany Giese were tabbed All-League First Team. Justman, Green Bay's sophomore second basemen, finished the regular season third on the squad in batting average (.355) while knocking in a team-high 33 runs. She totaled 74 bases, good for second-highest on the team. Justman finished the season top five in batting average, slugging percentage (.597), on base percentage (.418), OPS (1.015) and RBI. Justman and Peters made up to of the four hitters in the Horizon League to have an OPS over 1.000 (minimum six at-bats). Giese, a senior outfielder, hit .377, the second-best mark in the league. The Huntley, Ill. native drew 16 walks and reached base at a clip of .444. Giese was also 24-of-26 on stolen bases, shattering the GB single season and career stolen bases records. Peters, Justman, and Giese mark the first trio of GB players to be tabbed First Team honors since Miranda Reinke, Marissa Michalkiewicz, and Briana Cavin did it in 2014.

Becca Edwards and Samantha Saloun were named to the All-League Second Team. Edwards, the primary first baseman, was efficient in the middle of the lineup. After 101 at-bats, she hit .267 and had an on base percentage of .388. She appeared in 43 of the team's 47 games while making 40 starts. Saloun started all 47 games behind the dish while hitting .303 and driving in 26 runs. She tied with Justman for seven home runs, the second-highest mark on the team. Edwards and Saloun are the first duo to garner Second-Team awards since Abby Brinkmeier and Allie Taylor in 2017.

Brittany Baneck was named as one of two pitchers to make the All-League Second Team alongside Youngstown State's Elle Buffenbarger. Baneck, a Green Bay native who attended nearby Green Bay Preble high school, recorded a 3.39 ERA in 28 appearances and 19 starts. Her 1.32 WHIP was the best on the pitching staff. She struck out 125 batters and walked just 45 in a team-high 124.0 innings worked. Opponents hit .249 off Baneck.

Abby Gawlinski was tabbed to the All-Freshman Team, posting a team-leading 2.84 ERA after making 19 appearances and 15 starts. Gawlinski went the distance in six of her 15 starts and recorded one shutout. She surrendered just 33 earned runs in 81.1 innings worked. Her 2.84 ERA was the sixth-lowest in the Horizon League.
