MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Jan. 9, 2010) - The Green Bay Phoenix (11-6,
4-2 HL) suffered a 71-51 defeat to the Milwaukee Panthers (10-7, 2-3) Saturday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Arena.
Green Bay scored just eight points over the final 12 minutes of the contest as
the Panthers pulled away for the Horizon League win.
Milwaukee used a 14-0 run to storm out to a 17-4 lead in the
game's first six minutes. Green Bay responded by scoring 17 of the next 21
points to draw even (21-21), but never was able to regain the lead the rest of
the afternoon.
Milwaukee led 35-28 at halftime, but quickly expanded its
advantage to 15 by scoring the first eight points of the second half. Green Bay
rallied again, chipping away at the 43-28 deficit by going on a 15-4 spurt.
Green Bay was held to 36.5 percent shooting from the field
(22 for 61), making just 5 of 24 shots from 3-point range. The Panthers topped
the 50 percent mark (22 for 43) from the floor and was 10 for 20 from beyond
the arc.
Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Phoenix in points
(15), rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (4). Fellow Milwaukee native Troy Cotton had 14 points on four made 3-pointers.
James Eayrs totaled 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the
Panthers. Green Bay was whistled for 25 fouls, while UWM committed just 13. As
a result, the Panthers attempted 26 free throws (17 made) to just six for Green
Bay (2 made).
Green Bay returns home Thursday night to play a conference
matchup with Wright State.
