GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite a team-high 22 points from senior
Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.), Green Bay (3-4, 0-1 HL) could not overcome
hot shooting from visiting Cleveland State (9-0, 1-0 HL) Thursday night at the
Resch Center, and the Phoenix dropped its Horizon League opener 83-75 to the Vikings.
Green
Bay's all-conference senior Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) was able to play for the Phoenix despite
battling an illness which kept him out of Thursday morning's shootaround. The
senior was held to nine points, almost nine points below his season average.
Five
early points from Perine helped the Phoenix jump ahead 5-2, but CSU rallied
with a 9-1 run to go ahead 11-6. After missing a three on the opening possession,
the Vikings knocked down their next five while building a 25-15 lead with 9:42
remaining before halftime.
Led
by eight points from sophomore Troy Snyder (Bolingbrook, Ill.), Green Bay responded with a 17-6 run. Snyder
capped the run with a three-pointer for a 32-31 lead. After a pair of CSU free
throws, used a steal and thunderous dunk to put the Phoenix back in front by
one.
Snyder
finished with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field while adding a
team-high seven rebounds. The sophomore's effort on the glass helped Green Bay
outrebound the Vikings 34-27.
However,
two more Cleveland State threes, one apiece from Trevon Harmon and Tim Kamczyc,
helped the visitors go into halftime with a 39-36 edge. The Vikings knocked
down seven of their nine tries from three in the first 20 minutes.
Cleveland
State made 10-of-14 three-point attempts for the game, including many contested
triples from well behind the three-point line. The Vikings entered the game
shooting just 28.8 percent from long range.
Freshman
Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) scored
six of Green Bay's first nine points after intermission, and two Brown free
throws made the score 49-45 with 12:22 to play.
The
7-foot-1 freshman scored 10 of his career-high 15 points in the second half. For
the game, Brown hit 4-of-8 shots and 7-of-8 free throws while adding five
rebounds.
Cleveland
State built its lead to 13 with 7:23 to play, but led by Perine, Green Bay
continued to claw its way back. With his team down 10 with 52 seconds to play, Perine
scored the hosts' next eight points, including a three with 31 seconds left to
make it 75-70.
Perine
led all Green Bay players with 22 points on an 8-for-12 shooting performance.
The senior knocked down two of his three shots from long range and added three
rebounds in 37 minutes.
The
Vikings were able to ice the game at the line, where they were 31-for-38 for
the game. CSU's Norris Cole, the HL's leading scorer, was held to just 5-of-14
shooting, but used a 15-of-16 effort from the free-throw line to finish with a
game-high 26 points.
Green
Bay will look to bounce back and even its Horizon League record Saturday
afternoon, hosting Youngstown State at 1 p.m.
