INDIANAPOLIS - Seventh-seeded Detroit (20-13) bounced No. 3 Green
Bay (21-12) from the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship by a 62-53 final
score on Friday night in second-round action at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Green Bay,
which won both of the regular season meetings against the Titans by two points,
never led in the contest.
Detroit took a 31-26 lead into halftime after holding Green
Bay to just 31.8 percent shooting (7 of 22). Titan Thomas Kennedy buried a 3-pointer
with two seconds left to give Detroit a boost after Green Bay had narrowed the margin
to two by holding the Titans scoreless over the previous four minutes.
The Titans continued that momentum and reached a double-digit
advantage (42-32) with 12:50 remaining in the contest, as the Phoenix mustered
just six points over the opening eight minutes.
The Titans did not make a field goal over the final 8:09,
but made all 12 of its free throws over the stretch run. Green Bay pulled
within five, 52-47, with 1:26 left on a Troy Cotton (Milwaukee, Wis.) bucket,
but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Detroit, which entered the game last in the Horizon League
in free throw percentage at 65 percent, made 20 of 24 (.833) attempts, including
17 of 19 after intermission. Meanwhile, the Phoenix converted just 10 of 18
(.556), with just one attempt in the second half.
For the game, Green Bay made only 3 of 16 3-point shots (18.8
percent). Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) dropped in a game-high 22 points to
lead the Phoenix. He made exactly half of Green Bay's 20 field goals. Cotton
finished with 12.
Green Bay, which has won more than 20 games for the second
straight year and last season played in the inaugural College Basketball
Invitational, will now wait until the evening of Sunday, March 14 to learn its
postseason fate.
