Preseason from the Eyes of a Freshman...

Preseason is two weeks underway and the team is getting excited for the upcoming season!

There were seven freshmen this year, myself included, and we all had no idea what to expect when coming in to preseason.  We had all come up with worst scenario situations and were pleased to find that we were only making ourselves nervous and that nothing was as bad as we thought it might be.  Being a freshman, there are a lot of firsts that I think we will all remember.

First day of preseason: We were all excited/nervous so I don't think many of us slept the night before.  I spent the night waking up every few minutes afraid that I forgot something or was late for practice already.  Time has been flying by so it feels like that was months ago, but I still remember how great it felt to finally be practicing with the team after waiting all summer to find out what it was going to be like.  Practices are not easy but we have already learned way more than I thought we would and it has only been two weeks.

First time playing in the arena: Even though it was just practice, the first time that we got to play in the arena was amazing.  The whole atmosphere of the arena is unlike any other gym I have ever played in.  We are really lucky to have such a great place to play and it was so cool to step in there for the first time knowing that it will be our home court for the next four years.

First time scrimmaging: This weekend we had a scrimmage in the arena which was a lot of fun because we got to put our jerseys on for the first time and play with people in the stands and a real scoreboard.  We played each other but we went though our full game warm up together so it felt like a real game, which was really exciting and made us anxious to start playing.  The scrimmage was a good way to get used to playing outside of practice and it was our first taste of playing in a college volleyball game so we were thrilled.

And of course the list of memories wouldn't be complete without Chubby Bunny:  We played a game of "chubby bunny" which means we shoved as many marshmallows into our mouths as we could while saying "chubby bunny".  I would have won but apparently the rules don't allow you to swallow the marshmallows so I was disqualified.  After that the upperclassmen took us on a "church walk" which means, for clarification, they led us to a haunted church in the middle of the woods during the night, not that we did a church walk-a-thon fundraiser. Some of the freshmen were scared but I am proud to say that I was definitely not scared at all...

We also had our first chance to go home this weekend which was nice after two hard weeks of practice but coming back made this all seem more real - we are not just going to camp like it felt for a while; we are actual college students now!

I can't believe that two-a-days are already over and we are on our way to the start of our season.  I hope all of freshman year does not go this fast, because we are really enjoying our time here on the Green Bay volleyball team!!
