Fletcher Leads Phoenix to Bounce Back Win Over Detroit

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) set the tone early for his Green Bay (12-11, 6-5 HL) team Sunday afternoon, and then the senior guard put the finishing touches on a 85-74 Horizon League win over visiting Detroit (11-12, 5-6 HL) by scoring seven of his game-high 24 points in the last five minutes.

Green Bay led 39-38 at the break before an early 9-2 run by Detroit gave the Titans a 49-47 lead with 15:59 to play. It would prove to be the visitors' last lead, with Fletcher starting an 8-0 run to put the Phoenix up 55-49 at the 12:50 mark.

Detroit's deficit was still only three with 4:35 to play, but Fletcher again started an 8-0 run with an acrobatic layup in the lane, and his highlight reel three-point play with 1:17 to play made it 84-72 and sealed the Green Bay win.

"It was great to see all the fans out here to watch this team, because I have said it all year long but we are very entertaining," said head coach Brian Wardle. "We have a lot of young talent, and I thought today was a day that the fans saw that. It was a great win team to get a talented Detroit team here at home."

Fletcher's performance was part of a bounce back effort not only for himself, but also for his Phoenix team after a stinging 63-61 home defeat against Wright State Friday night. In that contest, Green Bay committed 17 turnovers. Sunday, the Phoenix had a season-high 20 assists while committing a season-low five turnovers.

"Turnovers have been a problem," Wardle said. "We have been talking about it and stressing one more pass, one more pass, one more pass, and I thought today we really moved the ball, we passed up good shots for great shots, and we knocked them down."

Led by Fletcher and freshman Kam Cerroni (Sussex, Wis.), the Phoenix three-point shooting also came alive. Fletcher hit three of his four attempts while Cerroni drained 3-for-5 from long range for a Green Bay team which knocked down a season-high 11 three-pointers (11-20). Cerroni scored 15 points, hitting five threes, in 14 minutes in the team's two weekend games.

Fletcher was not alone for a Phoenix team that scored 80 or more points for the first time in 2010-11 and had six players tally at least eight points. His backcourt mate, senior Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.), rebounded after scoring a combined six points in the past two games, going 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the line to reach 16 points. The senior duo had nine assists (Fletcher-5, Perine-4) and just two turnovers (1 each).

Freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) was limited to just 21 minutes because of foul trouble, but battled with Preseason All-Horizon League performer Eli Holman down low to post double figures with 10 points. Cerroni and fellow true freshman Daniel Turner (McCordville, Ind.) added nine points apiece as Wardle's trio of true freshmen contributed 29 points and 10 rebounds in the contest.

Green Bay hit just 2-of-18 shots from long range in the first meeting with the Titans, a 79-56 defeat in Detroit on Dec. 30. However, a 7-for-10 effort from beyond the arc Sunday helped the Phoenix to the slim halftime lead. Cerroni and Perine each hit both of their triples in the opening 20 minutes.

"It feels good to contribute and get an opportunity, and I just want to make the most of it," said Cerroni. "Things are starting to fall lately and I am starting to find my niche. My confidence has always been there, but shots are just starting to fall now, and hopefully it keeps coming."

The Phoenix shot 50 percent from the field for the second-straight game, hitting 30-of-59 shots.

Green Bay hits the road for its next three games, beginning with a game at Milwaukee on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. The Phoenix defeated the Panthers 69-64 on Jan. 8 at the Resch Center.
