MADISON, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay
returned to its challenging non-conference road schedule on Wednesday night at the
Kohl Center, and the Phoenix (4-5) was handed a 70-42 loss by No. 16/14
Wisconsin (7-2).
After following behind 8-2 in the opening minutes, the
Phoenix got back-to-back buckets by sophomore Alec Brown (Winona,
Minn.) to start a 9-4 run and cut the lead to one. Senior Steve Baker (St. Paul,
Minn.) capped it with a three-point play to make it 12-11 with 10:20 to play.
A scoring drought followed for the Phoenix, who
tallied just a Terry Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) free throw
during a 14-1 Wisconsin run. Two Brown free throws and a Johnson jumper cut the
deficit to 10 with 36 seconds on the clock, but the Badgers' Ben Brust put his team up
33-21 at the break with a jumper at the buzzer.
Wisconsin, winners of 42 consecutive games at home against
unranked opponents, opened the second half on a 14-4 run and never looked back.
Brown was the lone Phoenix player to reach double figures,
scoring 10 points. Junior big man Brennan Cougill (Sioux City, Iowa) had six points and eight rebounds off the Phoenix
bench.
Green Bay outrebounded the Badgers 37-36 and grabbed
15 offensive rebounds, including five by Cougill and three from sophomore Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.).
The Phoenix returns to action when it faces another
ranked opponent on the road Saturday. Green Bay plays at No. 11/11 Marquette in
Milwaukee at 8 p.m.
