CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite a last second shot by senior Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) to
force overtime, Green Bay (12-13, 6-7 HL) fell 63-61 at UIC (7-19, 2-12 HL) on
a controversial buzzer beater from Robo Kreps.
Neither
team led by more than five points throughout the 45-minute game, and the Flames
were up by five with 6:36 to play in regulation. The Phoenix scored the next
six points, including back-to-back fastbreak layups by junior Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Fletcher.
The
Flames regained the lead with a minute to play on a Paul Carter putback,
setting the stage for Fletcher's game-tying shot. With his team struggling to
find an open look, head coach Brian Wardle called a timeout with one second
left. Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee,
Wis.) found Fletcher underneath, who tied the game at 56-56.
After
UIC struck first in overtime, Fletcher gave the Phoenix a one-point lead on the
team's first possession with a triple. Carter and Fletcher traded baskets again
as Green Bay led 61-60 with 1:52 on the clock. After UIC's Corey Gray tied the
game at 61-61 with a free throw, both teams had empty possessions.
On
the final possession, Kreps dribbled off a ballscreen, pump faked and hit a running
15-footer at the buzzer. Kreps appeared to travel on the play but the senior's
game-winner stood.
Freshman
Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) had 14
points and eight rebounds to lead the Phoenix, including 10 points and seven
boards in the opening half. Despite hitting just 38.7 percent from the field,
including one of nine three-pointers, the Phoenix led 26-24.
Williams
had 11 of his 13 points in the second half and added seven rebounds. Williams
and Brown were the lone Green Bay players in double figures while Carter and
Kreps were the lone Flames players with 10 or more. Carter scored 22 points
while Kreps finished with 21.
Green
Bay will look to bounce back Saturday as the Phoenix will stay in Chicago and
play at Loyola at 3 p.m.
