GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay rising sophomore Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) competed at the Amar'e Stoudemire Skills
Academy in Chicago this past weekend with the top collegiate big men in the
nation. Brown was one of 11 college players to participate in the event from
June 23-25.
The
7-foot-1 center represented not only the Green Bay program but also the country's
mid-major conferences. Brown was the lone mid-major player at the camp which
included three players from the BIG EAST, three from the ACC, two from the Big
10 and one from the SEC. He was also one of just four underclassmen to
participate and was the lone player that was measured at to be at least seven
feet tall.
The
other college players included: Jared Sullinger (Ohio State), Mason and Miles
Plumlee (Duke), Anthony Davis (Kentucky), James McAdoo (North Carolina), Trevor
Mbakwe (Minnesota), Aaric Murray (West Virginia), Alex Oriahki (Connecticut),
Thomas Robinson (Kansas) and Yarou Mouphtaou (Villanova).
"I
thought it was really cool being the only one from a smaller conference," Brown
said. "I felt like I had to represent not only Green Bay and our program but
all mid-major players. It taught me a whole lot and getting to play against
some of the best big men in the country was a new experience. I held my own
though and thought I did pretty well."
Brown
started each of Green Bay's 32 games as a freshman in 2010-11 and averaged 10.2
points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. He earned a spot on the Horizon
League's All-Newcomer Team and began to earn attention for his impressive skill
level.
"Alec
being a part of the Amar'e Stoudemire camp is something that has never happened
at Green Bay," said head coach Brian Wardle. "It is great for the program and it is great for him. Hopefully it
is a tell tale sign of things to come in the future and Green Bay fans will be
excited about watching one of the best centers in the country."
As
one of the 11 college players at the Stoudemire Academy, Brown served as a camp
counselor for a group of about 20 high school players and helped teach them
about the differences between playing at high school and at the college level.
During
the three days, Brown went through multiple sessions of drill work and played
pickup games with his fellow big men as well as the guards who were
participating in the Deron Williams Camp. He also had a chance on Friday to
meet and talk with Amar'e Stoudemire, who currently plays for the New York
Knicks.
Wardle
and his staff worked hard to push for Brown to earn a spot in the elite big man
camp, something that the young center said he really appreciated.
"It
was such a great experience and I'm so thankful for everyone who helped to get
me into it," said Brown. "Getting to play with these big name guys and knowing
I could play right along with them. It was cool to experience that."
