GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In two-straight
regular season games, Keifer Sykes
(Chicago, Ill.) has posted a new career high. In two-straight regular season
games, Sykes has led his team to victory over an opponent from his hometown.
Now, for the second-straight time, Sykes has garnered Horizon League Player of
the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.
Sykes, a 5-foot-11 point
guard, scored a career-high 31 points on Saturday to help the Phoenix post
a 72-67 season-opening win over Chicago State. He made 7-of-14 shots from
the field and connected on a school-record 17 free throws (17-19). Sykes scored
22 of his 31 points after halftime to lead a Phoenix comeback and also added
seven rebounds and three steals in 36 minutes.
The last player
of the week honor of the 2011-12 season also went to Sykes after the
then-freshman guard scored 27 points in the regular season finale at UIC.
A Preseason All-Horizon
League Second-Team selection, Sykes became the first Green Bay player to score
30 or more points under third-year head coach Brian Wardle. His effort was the first 30-point game at the Resch
Center since Ryan Tillema scored 32 on Feb. 23, 2008 against UIC. There have
been five 30-point games by Phoenix players in 11 seasons at the Resch Center.
Sykes picks up where he left
off in 2011-12, when he averaged 14.7 points per game in the last 17 contests.
Now in 18 games as an 18-year old, the Chicago native is averaging 15.6 points
per game.
Green Bay will be on the road
for four-straight games beginning on Friday when the team begins play in the
World Vision Classic in Reno, Nevada. The Phoenix plays Southern Utah on Friday
at 10:30 p.m., tournament host Nevada Saturday at 8 p.m. and Cal State
Fullerton Sunday at 3 p.m.
