DAKOTA DUNES, S.C. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Junior Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) began the final round of the USD Coyote Classic on Tuesday seven strokes behind the leader, but the Green Bay men's golfer rallied with a 1-over par 73 in challenging conditions to join a three-way tie for first place and force a playoff.
After tying the first four playoff holes, Kiela was outdueled by Creighton's Johnny Spellerberg on the fifth hole to finish in second place. It was Kiela's third top-five finish in three tournaments this season and the second time finishing as the individual runner-up.
Kiela's round on Tuesday was tied for the low round of the day. The junior carded two birdies and 13 pars in the round.
Omaha won the eight-team tournament while North Dakota State, South Dakota, Creighton and Green Bay rounded out the top five.
Junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) recovered from an opening round 79 to play the final 36 holes in 3-over par and finish tied for eighth. Boockmeier finished the 54-hole tournament tied for second with 37 pars.
Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was second in the field in birdies with 11, but the sophomore finished tied for 31st with senior teammate Tyler Schmidt (Jefferson, Wis.).
Green Bay has a quick turnaround before playing in the John Dallio Memorial hosted by DePaul this weekend at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, Ill.
