YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) received several stitches above the left eye after getting hit in the first half, but the Horizon League's Player of the Year scored 11 second-half points and made the game-winning shot with 17.1 seconds to play to finish off a rally and lead Green Bay (20-5, 9-2 HL) to a 63-62 win at Youngstown State on Wednesday night.
Green Bay trailed 58-48 with 8:14 to play, but the Phoenix defense held YSU to only four points and outscored the Penguins 15-4 to end the game. With the win, Green Bay moved into a three-way tie for first place with Valparaiso and Cleveland State heading into Friday night's game at Valpo.
The victory left head coach Brian Wardle with more wins (91) in his first five seasons than any coach in the program's Division I history. It also marked back-to-back 20-win seasons.
Senior Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.) scored 15 points, senior Alfonzo McKinnie (Chicago, Ill.) had a second consecutive double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Carrington Love added 12 points as the Phoenix put four players in double figures.
Green Bay returns to action on Friday night, playing Valparaiso at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
