OLD HICKORY, Tenn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) carded eight birdies on Tuesday morning and tied the Green Bay men's golf program record with a round of 7-under 65. The impressive performance marked Boockmeier's third round under par in the 54-hole tournament and helped him to a fourth place finish.
Boockmeier, who carded two 1-under par 71s on Monday, started his third round on hole No. 10 on Tuesday morning in a steady rain. The senior birdied his first hole, but a bogey on No. 13 dropped him to even par for the round. Beginning on No. 15, Boockmeier began a stretch of six-straight birdies that continued onto his second nine holes.
His stretch ended with a par on No. 3, but Boockmeier birdied No. 6 for his eighth and final birdie of the round. His 7-under par 65 tied former Phoenix standout Shaun Rezauchek for the single-round school record. For the tournament, he finished at 9-under par.
“It is a pretty cool feeling being in that zone and not missing a shot for an extended stretch of holes,” Boockmeier said. “It is fun to just fire at tough flags that most guys in the tournament are not going for. The longest putt I made was about 15 feet on my first hole, but the rest of them were pretty short if not tap-ins.”
Boockmeier was not the only Phoenix golfer to finish the tournament under par as junior Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) finished at 1-under par after rounds of 73, 70 and 72. Kiela finished in a tie for 17th place as Green Bay finished the tournament in ninth place.
The tournament was the final tune-up for Green Bay before next week's Horizon League Championships at Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The 54-hole tournament runs from April 24-26.
“Our team shoots pretty consistent scores no matter what course we play, which is exciting because next week we will play one of the hardest courses we play all year,” Boockmeier said. “If we can keep the ball in play and putt well, I think we have a pretty good chance to contend.
