GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Oakland went on a 12-1 run in the last five minutes to pull away from Green Bay at the Resch Center on Friday night 85-72, in a battle for second place in the Horizon League. The Phoenix (17-12, 11-6 HL) was outscored 50-33 in the second half, as the Golden Grizzlies (23-7, 13-4 HL) secured themselves a top two finish in the league.
Green Bay and Oakland were tied at 67-67, before Oakland went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 73-67. After a Kenneth Lowe made a free throw, Oakland answered with another 6-0 run and led by 11 with 1:58 left in the game.
Lowe played big for the Phoenix all day, leading the team with a season-high 17 points and five rebounds. The Little Chute native went 8-for-10 from the field and topped his 14-point effort against Oakland from earlier this season.
Kerem Kanter registered his seventh double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kanter has now notched back-to-back double-doubles, after going for 11 points and 13 rebounds at UIC on Tuesday night.
Freshman Kameron Hankerson provided a nice spark for Green Bay off the bench, scoring eight points on a pair of made 3s. The eight points is the most Hankerson has scored in a Horizon League game in his career.
Oakland shot 55.2 percent (32-for-58) from the field, the most Green Bay's allowed since its trip to Kansas State and the highest the Golden Grizzlies have shot in a league game this year. The Phoenix shot 40.6 percent (28-for-69) form the floor, but went just 2-for-12 from 3 in the second half.
Charles Cooper scored 15 points and his 4-for-4 effort at the free throw line helped Green Bay go 12-for-14 (85.7 percent) at the charity stripe as a team.
With the loss, Green Bay can no longer finish with a top two seed at Motor City Madness, but can also finish no worse than fourth due to holding tiebreakers over Wright State and Northern Kentucky.
The Phoenix will honor its six seniors on Sunday afternoon against Detroit Mercy in its regular season finale. Warren Jones, Turner Botz, Jamar Hurdle, Tevin Findlay, Charles Cooper and Kenneth Lowe will be recognized in the pregame starting at 1:50 p.m.
