GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay men's basketball team played the first-ever Horizon League game at the Kress Center on Friday night, but it was the visiting UIC Flames that came out on top by a final of 83-75 on Senior Night. Seniors
Khalil Small and
David Jesperson were recognized prior to the game for their contributions and commitment to the Phoenix program.
Green Bay (10-19, 5-11) led 38-34 at the half, but it was the 15-0 run that UIC (16-12, 11-4 HL) used midway through the second half that was ultimately the difference. GB led 62-58 with 9:06 left in the game, before the visiting Flames rattled off 15-straight points and took a 73-62 lead with 4:54 remaining.
GB went over four minutes without scoring, and never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Sandy Cohen III led all scorers in the game with 25 points and seven rebounds, but went just 5-for-12 at the free throw line. The Phoenix finished a season-low 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the free throw line as a team.
The Phoenix knocked down 12 3-pointers, its third-straight game with at least 11 made 3s.
PJ Pipes and
Kameron Hankerson each made three 3s in the game, with each player finishing in double-figures with 11 and 12 points respectively.
UIC dominated on the boards, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds and winning the rebounding edge at 60-42. It also scored 46 points in the paint, compared to GB's 30.
Khalil Small was able to get into double-figures in the game, scoring 10 points and grabbing six rebounds while battling foul trouble all evening. With his six rebounds, Small becomes just the seventh player in program history to score 1,200 points and grab 500 career rebounds.
The win by the Flames was the first time since 2004 that it won in Green Bay, and also picked up the season sweep over the Phoenix.
The game was played in front of a crowd of over 3,800 that included alumni, current students, admitted students and Phoenix fans alike. It was part of Krash the Kress, which drew thousands of fans and students to the campus and Kress Center.
GB will hit the road for the final weekend of the regular season, making its Detroit road trip. It will play at Oakland on Thursday (Feb. 22) and at Detroit Mercy (Feb. 24) on Saturday. GB beat both teams at home earlier this season.
