QUICK HITS
CIT FIRE
Green Bay has been lighting up the scoreboard in its two games of the CIT, averaging 100 PPG and shooting over 54 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range. The team has enjoyed a +7.0 rebounding margin and is averaging 10.5 made 3s in the two games, while shooting 81 percent from the free throw line. Thanks to an average of 20 assists per game in the CIT, six players are averaging 8.5 PPG or more, led by
Sandy Cohen III with 24.5.
JayQuan McCloud (18.0 PPG) and
ShanQuan Hemphill (13.5 PPG) are also averaging in double-figures, with all three players shooting better than 58 percent in the two games.
FIRST-EVER MEETING
As was the case in its last matchup with FIU, Green Bay will be facing an opponent for the first time in its program history when it faces CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners have been competing at the Division I level since 2007 and most famously made a run to the NIT semifinals in 2016-17 as a No. 8 seed. Worth noting, GB and CSU Bakersfield both made the NCAA Tournament in 2016, and both played in Oklahoma City. GB fell to Texas A&M, while Bakersfield lost to Oklahoma.
MAKING HISTORY
With its Second Round win over FIU on Tuesday night, the 2018-19 team made program history, becoming the first team to win multiple postseason games in the program's Division I history (since 1981-82). Twice under Dick Bennett the team won one game in the postseason, and once under Tod Kowalczyk in 2010, but no team has ever won multiple games. This is also the latest into the calendar that any Green Bay basketball team has still been playing.
POSTSEASON PARTY
Green Bay is making its sixth postseason appearance in the last seven seasons (3rd in 4 seasons under Darner) after accepting an invite to the 2019 CIT. GB has now played in the NCAA, CBI and CIT under Darner and will be making its second appearance all-time in the CIT. The Phoenix took part in the CIT after the 2012-13 season, when it finished 18-16, before losing to Bradley in the First Round. GB joins IUPUI as the two teams from the Horizon League to be playing in the CIT, with four teams total from the HL making postseason play this year (NKU in the NCAA; Wright State in the NIT). GB is the last remaining Horizon League team to be playing this season, and the last collegiate team in the state of Wisconsin.
PLAYING THE FIELD
Five of Green Bay's 11 D1 non-conference opponents made a postseason appearance, with four of those teams playing in the NCAA Tournament and two of them making it to the Sweet Sixteen after the opening weekend of the tournament. While GB only went 1-4 in those five games, its non-conference schedule ranked 11th among all D1 teams this season. GB's signature win came over a Belmont squad at home, which was the only mid-major team to an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament this year. GB had the strongest non-conference schedule among all Horizon League teams this season.
TEAMING UP FOR THE RECORD BOOK
Linc Darner's 2018-19 team will have its name among many of the top 5 single season team record categories, including points scored, points per game, field goals made, field goals attempted, steals and made 3-pointers. In his fourth season at the helm, Darner now has four of the top five single season team scoring totals. He also has three of the top five in total steals. Check out where this year's team ranks in those categories:
Total Points: 2,853; 2nd most all-time
Total Steals: 275; 2nd most all-time
Field Goal Attempts: 2,212; 2nd most all-time
Points Per Game: 81.5; 4th most all-time
Field Goals Made: 1,014; 2nd most all-time
3-Pointers Made: 278; 2nd most all-time
Free Throws Made: 547; 4th most all-time
Total Rebounds: 1,277; 4th most all-time
SUPER SANDY
Senior
Sandy Cohen III has been the catalyst to the success of Green Bay this season and earned MVP honors for his efforts ETSU in the First Round, now averaging 17.6 PPG and earning First Team All-Horizon League honors for his efforts. Cohen has been playing his best basketball of late, having now scored 20 or more points in seven out of his last nine games, including a game-high 20 points in his team's win over FIU and 29 against ETSU. The Seymour native has scored in double-figures in 31 of his 35 games played this season, with 13 games of 20 points or more. He leads his team in every major statistical category: scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, blocks and minutes.
McCLOUD NINE
A potential Horizon All-League snub,
JayQuan McCloud had an outstanding junior and first season with GB. McCloud is averaging 13.8 PPG this year and has scored double-figures in 23 of 35 games this year, including eight games with 20 points or more. He scored 19 points in the First Round victory over ETSU and ranks 15th in the Horizon League scoring. He leads the team in made 3-pointers with 73 on the season, after making 4 more against FIU and scoring 17 points in the first half.
RINGING THE BELL
Sophomore
Trevian Bell has stepped up off the bench for GB, scoring another 10 points against FIU. Bell also scored a career-high 15 points thanks to three made 3-pointers in the HL Quarterfinal win over UIC. Bell was the player UIC dared to shoot and beat them, and the Joliet, Ill., native did just that. Bell played a season-high 24 minutes and went 5-for-7 from the field, netting just his fifth double-figure scoring game of the year. He might be the player that Darner needs to step up and surprise, helping the consistent efforts of Cohen, McCloud and Hemphill.
FILL OF HEMPHILL
ShanQuan Hemphill, who goes by Tank, has been one of the most consistent players for the Phoenix lately, scoring another 12 points in the CIT Second Round win over FIU, and was a rebound away from a double-double. That gave Hemphill his 26th game in double-figures this season, who ranks third on the team in scoring with 11.7 PPG. Tank is the only player on the roster to start in all 35 games this year and enjoyed a stretch in February where he racked up three-straight double-doubles.
