QUICK HITS
FINAL FOURTEEN
Green Bay is one of only 14 teams out of the 353 Division I teams in the NCAA to still be playing basketball this season, with four going to the NCAA Final Four and four to the NIT, four left in the CIT and two left in the CBI. With GB playing its 37th game on Tuesday night, that will mark the most games ever played in any season in program history, besting the previous mark of 36. This will also be the first time GB has ever played a game in the month of April, extending its program-record season already in play. This year's team became the first ever to win multiple games in the postseason, and will now aim for its fourth postseason victory on Tuesday night, which is more than the entire program had combined in the D1 era up to this point.
CIT DOMINANCE
Green Bay has simply dominated its three games of the CIT, averaging 93.3 PPG and shooting over 51 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range, while enjoying a +17.7 scoring margin. GB has been nearly automatic at the free throw line as well, making 54 of its 65 attempts for a 83 percent mark. Thanks to an average of 19 assists per game in the CIT, five players are averaging in double-figures led by
Sandy Cohen III with 21.3 PPG.
JayQuan McCloud (16.0 PPG),
Trevian Bell (10.7 PPG),
ShanQuan Hemphill (10.3 PPG) and
Cody Schwartz (10.0 PPG) are also averaging in double-figures, with four of those five players shooting over 50 percent from the field.
COHEN'S CAREER YEAR
Thanks to an outstanding effort all season and benefiting from playing in 36 games this year,
Sandy Cohen III will forever be in the record books for his senior season. Cohen has scored 630 points this year, the 4th most in a season by any GB player all-time, while also making 167 free throws (2nd most all-time), registering 169 assists (5th most all-time) and racking up 70 steals (3rd most all-time). After netting another 15 against CSU Bakersfield, he now sits on 984 points, 16 points away from 1,000 career points. Given the fact he's only played in 58 games until now, Cohen would become the first player in program history to score 1,000 career points in only 2 seasons of play.
CHALLENGING THE NON-CON
Following the results from this past weekend, Green Bay owns the 10th-best non-conference strength of schedule among the 353 D1 teams, according to KenPom. Texas Southern, GB's next opponent, ranked first among all teams. GB picked up wins over NIU, Belmont and challenged itself with trips to Oregon, Michigan State, Creighton and Iowa.
PLAYING THE FIELD
Five of Green Bay's 11 D1 non-conference opponents made a postseason appearance, with four of those teams playing in the NCAA Tournament and two of them making it to the Sweet Sixteen after the opening weekend of the tournament. While GB only went 1-4 in those five games, its non-conference schedule ranked 11th among all D1 teams this season. GB's signature win came over a Belmont squad at home, which was the only mid-major team to an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament this year. GB had the strongest non-conference schedule among all Horizon League teams this season.
TEAMING UP FOR THE RECORD BOOK
Linc Darner's 2018-19 team will have its name among many of the top 5 single season team record categories, including points scored, points per game, field goals made, field goals attempted, steals and made 3-pointers. In his fourth season at the helm, Darner now has four of the top five single season team scoring totals. He also has three of the top five in total steals. Check out where this year's team ranks in those categories:
Total Points: 2,933; 2nd most all-time
Total Steals: 280; 2nd most all-time
Field Goal Attempts: 2,271; 2nd most all-time
Points Per Game: 81.5; 4th most all-time
Field Goals Made: 1,041; 2nd most all-time
3-Pointers Made: 278; 2nd most all-time
Free Throws Made: 562; 4th most all-time
Total Rebounds: 1,317; 2nd most all-time
McCLOUD NINE
A potential Horizon All-League snub,
JayQuan McCloud had an outstanding junior and first season with GB. McCloud is averaging 13.8 PPG this year and has scored double-figures in 24 of 36 games this year, including eight games with 20 points or more. He scored 19 points in the First Round victory over ETSU and added another 12 points in the win over CSU Bakersfield. He leads the team in made 3-pointers with 75 on the season, which is the 9th most in a season by any GB player all-time.
RINGING THE BELL
Sophomore
Trevian Bell has stepped up off the bench for GB, scoring in double figures in three out of his last five games, including a 13-point outing against CSU Bakersfield. Bell scored a career-high 15 points thanks to three made 3-pointers in the HL Quarterfinal win over UIC and has made an astonishing 20-straight free throws. He has played 20 minutes or more in five of the last six games, after playing in 23 minutes against CSU Bakersfield. The sophomore has been lighting it up from beyond the arc as well lately, making multiple 3-pointers in four of his last five games.
FILL OF HEMPHILL
ShanQuan Hemphill, who goes by Tank, has been one of the most consistent players for the Phoenix lately, scoring another 12 points in the CIT Second Round win over FIU, and was a rebound away from a double-double. That gave Hemphill his 26th game in double-figures this season, who ranks third on the team in scoring with 11.5 PPG. Tank is the only player on the roster to start in all 36 games this year, and with a start against Texas Southern will become the first and only player to start in 37 games in a season.
