YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay faced Youngstown State in its first of a five-game road trip on Friday night at the Beeghly Center and snapped a six-game winning streak the Penguins had on their home court with a 70-63 double-overtime victory.
Green Bay improves to 10-10 on the season and 5-3 in Horizon League play, while YSU falls to 11-8 and 4-4.
The game began with a triple from
Caitlyn Hibner on the first Phoenix possession, but the host Penguins would answer moments later when Chelsea Olson buried a three-pointer of her own. All told, the opening frame wasn't productive for either offense, as the game was tied at 9-all at the end of the first, with Olson striking once again to knot things up.
The Phoenix offense made up for its lack of efficiency on offense on the defensive end of the floor, forcing the Penguins to shoot just 3-of-16 from the field and 1-of-9 from long range. Not much would change in terms of the Penguins' shooting production in the next quarter, with YSU turning in a 6-for-32 performance from the floor and 3-for-21 from beyond the arc.
The entire first half saw little separation as the teams matched bucket for bucket, but a late surge from
Frankie Wurtz to end the half which included a layup and back-to-back three-pointers put the Phoenix on top by six, 23-17, heading to the locker room.
The difference maker for YSU early seemed to be second-chance points, as the Penguins owned an 11-2 advantage in the category at the halfway mark.
Youngstown State used a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to take a five-point lead with 3:47 remaining in regulation, but layups from Hibner,
Karly Murphy and
Lyndsey Robson put GB back on top.
Robson later sank two clutch free throws with only 21 second remaining to put the Phoenix up three, 48-45, but an offensive rebound for the Penguins and a triple from YSU's Ny'Dajah Jackson tied the game and forced overtime.
The first overtime saw neither team lead by more than two points and ultimately ended with the score tied, 56-56. The second overtime proved to be a different story, as Green Bay pieced together an 11-2 run in answer of a Penguins triple to get things started.
Green Bay continued to pull away with free throws late, sinking five in the final minute to secure a 70-63 victory in double overtime.
Hibner scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in overtime and finished 7-of-12 from the field with one triple, nine rebounds and two assists in 41 minutes.
Robson added 13 points to the Phoenix total, highlighted by a perfect performance at the charity stripe where the junior finished 6-for-6.
Meghan Pingel also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points in 50 minutes.
Green Bay improves to 42-4 all-time against Youngstown State and handed the Penguins only their third loss at home in the last 27 games.
Green Bay finishes off its trip to Ohio on Sunday, as the team takes the floor against Cleveland State at 2 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.
