GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Green Bay for an equipment drive benefiting kids and families in need this holiday season.
Â
Donations were collected from a range of parties, including athletic programs on campus, specific student-athletes, families, community members, Phoenix alumni and staff.
"I am proud of Green Bay SAAC leadership and members for the vision, coordination and successful execution of this equipment drive," said Deputy Director of Athletics,
Jermaine Rolle. "The SAAC student-athletes are the engine behind this drive and are humbled and thankful to all who donated to this great cause. As student-athletes, they know the positive impact that participating in sport can have on a person, and wanted to share this opportunity with others. We are grateful to establish a relationship with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Green Bay and be able to donate these items. Green Bay SAAC trusts that the equipment will be a blessing to children within our community."
Â
Bryce Legois, a member of the men's cross country team, along with McKayla Kertscher, a forward on the women's soccer team, took the reins on organizing the equipment drive.
"This has been a very difficult and different year for many families, especially younger children with online school," said Legois. "No kid should be disadvantaged by not having the same opportunity as every other kid in the community. The focus of the equipment drive was to help families with financial issues be able to still support themselves. When kids engage in a sport at a young age, they can create opportunities for themselves, whether it's having a hobby, trying out for their high school team, or even earning a scholarship for college. The possibilities are endless when you give an opportunity to children like this."
Â
"Bryce really gets all the credit for starting and organizing this whole thing," said Kertscher. "He wanted to do it and went for it, I just joined in to help here and there along with other members of SAAC. I think giving back to the community in any way possible right now is really important, and that's a big part of what we want to do with SAAC. We want to thank all who donated and supported our efforts as well, we couldn't have done it without all of those amazing donations!"
Â
Boys and Girls Club Mission:
To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.Â
Â
Provide a world-class Club Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
"This generous donation of athletic equipment, clothing, school and other supplies is greatly appreciated," said Boys and Girls Club Director of Clubhouse Operations, Ben Perkovich. "Especially considering 2020 and this particular holiday season. Club will  be able to provide extra support for our members and families in a variety of ways thanks to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee drive. Green Bay is a giving, caring community and partners like UWGB and groups like SAAC are a prime example of that compassion and generosity"
