GB opened the 2019-20 season at the Duluth CXC Cup in Duluth, Minnesota. In the 10K freestyle, all five members of the men's team finished in the top 30 of the 98 participants. Additionally, in her collegiate debut, Lara Ketterer took fourth overall and earned a spot on the podium in the 7.5 freestyle race with a time of 22:09.4.
Following three more races that spanned the rest of December and early January, the Phoenix competed at the CCSA Gitchi Gami Games in Cable, Wisconsin, where both sides raced well. However, Maria Schoening was the standout performer for GB. The redshirt junior earned the CCSA performance of the week honor with her first collegiate win in the women's sprint. Schoening reached the semifinals with a top 12 time in the five heat quarterfinals that featured 27 skiers. She then had the top time in the two heats in the semis. During the the finals, Schoening claimed the victory with a time of 3:36.28, nearly four seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
After the CCSA Northwoods Nordic Invitational and CCSA Conference Championships, GB skied in the Central Regionals where the Phoenix placed fourth overall out of the five teams. Nonetheless, Lara Ketterer officially qualified for the NCAA Championships after her showing at the regionals, averaging fast enough times and high finishes consistently throughout the season to secure a spot.
Off the course, six members of the team were named to the 2020 National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team, presented by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association. For the men, redshirt senior Quinn Duffy, junior Shad Krafton and redshirt Sam Myers were selected. On the women's side, freshman Lara Ketterer, redshirt junior Sadie Peterson and junior Anna Zajakowski earned spots on the team as well.
