Green Bay Suffers Heartbreaking, Double-Overtime Loss in Horizon League Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay's season came to a heartbreaking end in double overtime on Thursday night at the Kress Center, as the Phoenix fell to No. 10 Purdue Fort Wayne, 89-84, in the First Round of the Horizon League Tournament.

Senior PJ Pipes battled through an ankle injury and scored a game-high 27 points on a 10-of-23 effort from the field, nearly willing the Green and White to victory with eight points in overtime.

A hot opening half saw both programs shoot 50% from long range, with PFW turning in a 6-of-12 performance and the Phoenix converting on three of its six attempts. GB began an impressive 15-of-27 (56%) from the floor while PFW followed closely behind at 14-for-31 (45%).

Green Bay led by eight on two separate occasions in the second half. The Mastodons came on strong late and diminished GB's six-point advantage to one in 43 seconds, making it a one-point game with 8:19 remaining, 55-54.

Lucas Stieber, a selection to the league's all-freshman team, sank two free throws with 17 seconds left in regulation to put the Phoenix in front 69-67. PFW's Ira Kpedi answered with a dunk on the other end to tie the game and force overtime.

Green Bay again appeared to be in control as the first overtime headed towards the final buzzer, but a long-range heave from the Mastodons' Jalon Pipkins banked off the glass and fell through the net to tie things at 78-all.

Purdue Fort Wayne scored the first five points of the second overtime period and never looked back, eventually securing an 89-84 win to advance to the Quarterfinals.

Amari Davis scored 18 points and collected six rebounds in 48 minutes. Emmanuel Ansong continued his high-level production with 18 points on an efficient 7-of-10 clip.

The Phoenix was without senior Josh Jefferson, who was out due to an upper-body injury.
