GREEN BAY --- Despite a short lightning delay and a steady rain all night at Aldo Santaga Stadium, the Green Bay women's soccer team unofficially kicked off 2021 with a 4-1 preseason win over Viterbo on Saturday night. The two teams played three 30-minute sessions, totaling a typical 90 minute match, with GB netting four goals before the V-Hawks added one in the final frame.
GB will play one more preseason game next week against Cardinal Stritch before the matches count for real on August 19 against St. Thomas at Aldo Santaga Stadium in the season-opener.
Grace Miller headed home the first goal for the Phoenix, four players surrounded a ricocheted ball for the second goal and Savannah Hayes added the third. GB would add its fourth on a nice strike from
Anna María Björnsdóttir, as the Phoenix used its 90 minutes to work on its tactical approach and get the many new players some minutes.
The team officially opened training on Monday, having only five days as a team to practice before using this first exhibition game to prepare for the regular season.
The game was delayed at the start due to inclement weather in the area, but fortunately for both teams was able to play a full 90 minute match.
