MILWAUKEE, Wis. -Â The Green Bay women's basketball team opened up Horizon League play with a dominant 76-53 beatdown of the Milwaukee Panthers in the Cream City Thursday evening. Head Coach Kevin Borseth now sits one victory shy of reaching 800 in his career. Green Bay, after dropping the season opener, has won five of its last six contests. GB led for all but 46 seconds in the win over MKE.
The Phoenix (5-2, 1-0 HL) had four players score in double figures, led by Maddy Schreiber's career-high 23 points. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz tacked on 16 points and six rebounds, and Natalie McNeal chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Milwaukee's four-game win streak came to a halt despite a good effort from Jorey Buwalda, who paced the Panthers (4-4, 0-1 HL) with 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
MKE opened the game with four unanswered points to take a 4-3 lead thanks to Angie Cera's jumper in the paint. The lead wouldn't last long, as GB went on a 10-0 run, making it 13-4 following Cassie Schiltz's three-pointer. Milwaukee cut it to five, but Bailey Butler's buzzer-beating layup made it a seven-point advantage for the Phoenix after the opening 10 minutes. MKE started the second frame hot, and Anna Lutz's mid-range shot gave the Panthers a 24-22 lead with 4:56 to go in the first half. Green Bay answered in a big way in the final minutes, outscoring Milwaukee 14-2. McNeal scored six points, Kondrakiewicz added four, and freshman Maren Westin chipped in with a drive to the rim. McNeal put the finishing touches on the half with a bucket, helping GB to a comfortable 36-26 halftime lead.
GB cranked the heat up in the third quarter, blowing the game open to a 21-point lead by the end of the frame, outscoring MKE 16-5 in the process. Kondrakiewicz and Schiltz tallied five points, while Schreiber recorded six. GB held the Panthers to two-for-nine shooting in the frame and forced seven turnovers. It was a high-scoring affair in the fourth quarter, with the two squads racking up 46 combined points. Schreiber helped keep the game at arms-length for the Phoenix, scoring GB's first 11 points of the frame. Green Bay led by no less than 20 en route to the 76-53 blowout victory.
