GREEN BAY, Wis. – Dominant offense and a career outing from Cassie Schiltz helped the Green Bay Phoenix get past Cleveland State Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center.
Schiltz poured in a career-best 27 points while grabbing four rebounds, tallying three assists, and one block. The Phoenix (9-3, 2-0 HL) had four others reach double figures, including Maddy Schreiber (16 pts.), Natalie McNeal (10 pts.), Jasmine Kondrakiewicz (10 pts.), and Jenna Guyer (10 pts.)
Schiltz made six three-pointers, tied for sixth in program history for most triples made in a single game. The record had happened 14 times prior to today's game.
Cleveland State fell to 11-3 and 2-1 in HL action but made it tough on Green Bay thanks to Mickayla Perdue and Colbi Maples combining for 42 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team led by more than four points in the opening quarter. Bailey Butler knocked down a pair of free throws to give GB an 11-9 edge, but CSU came right back to tie it on a Brooklyn Fort-Davis layup with 4:08 remaining in the frame. Guyer came off the bench to put the Phoenix up four, but Shadiya Thomas made a mid-range shot to make it 22-20 in favor of Green Bay after the first 10 minutes. Both teams continued to go step-for-step in the second quarter, tallying 24 points apiece. The Phoenix would lead by as much as five, but CSU kept making shots. Perdue went off, racking up 16 points, including two free throws that would help make it a two-point GB advantage going into halftime.
The Phoenix slowly started to pull away coming out of the break, thanks to Schiltz, who ripped off three consecutive triples, giving GB a 60-53 lead with 4:32 left in the third period. Green Bay maintained at least a 10-point lead for all but seven-tenths of a second in the final minutes of the frame. McNeal sent a pass for Guyer, who leaped to make the catch but was fouled. Guyer sunk both free throws and the Phoenix took a 68-57 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Vikings tried to close the gap several times, but GB kept an arm's length, having at least an eight-point lead for the entirety of the quarter. Schiltz could not be stopped, adding another 10 points, guiding Green Bay to an 85-72 win over Cleveland State.
