Giese Breaks All-time Hits Record as Phoenix Split with Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio --Senior Tiffany Giese made history on Friday, breaking the all-time hits record for Green Bay Softball in the doubleheader at Cleveland State. The Huntley, Ill., native used a leadoff single in the top of the first inning of game one to record hit number 169 to pass Katie Cooney (2007-11) for the all-time Green Bay hits record. The Phoenix dropped game one 4-2, but bounced back to take game two 7-3. 

GAME 1 | Cleveland State 4, Green Bay 2

Senior Brittany Baneck (6-10) got the ball to start for Green Bay and took the loss.

Giese's three-hit day led the Phoenix offensively. Junior Samantha Saloun compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior Randi McKay also helped out for Green Bay, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Phoenix got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Giese came across to score the lone run of the inning for Green Bay and get them on the board.

The Phoenix lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 2-1. Green Bay scored once on an RBI single off the bat of McKay, which evened the score at 2-2. Cleveland State then scored two times over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 4-2 win.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 7, Cleveland State 3

Green Bay got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Phoenix put seven runs on the board and beat the Cleveland State Vikings 7-3 Friday.

Freshman Paeton Kringel (3-7) started in the circle and picked up the win for Green Bay. The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Freshman Kelly Greene also made an impact in the circle for the Phoenix, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

In the batter's box, the Phoenix were led by senior Dawn Pawlak, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Senior Tiffany Giese compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Jadin Justman also contributed for Green Bay, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Phoenix put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Junior Hailey Heckenlaible's run-scoring single was the big hit in Green Bay's three-run inning.

The Phoenix then held the Vikings scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Green Bay brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Giese's single, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Phoenix.

Cleveland State narrowed Green Bay's lead to 5-3 before the Phoenix stretched the advantage to 7-3 in the sixth inning. Freshman Paige Hanson's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Phoenix. The score remained 7-3 for the rest of the game, as Green Bay coasted to the win.
