Phoenix Volleyball Reveals 2023 Schedule

Green Bay holds first home contest September 14

6/20/2023 12:30:00 PM

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Head coach Abbey Sutherland and the Green Bay Volleyball program announced today the 2023 schedule. The Phoenix has 32 games on the docket, including 13 contests at the Kress Center. Last season, GB went 23-11 overall and 13-5 in Horizon League action, concluding the 2022 campaign in third place while reaching the conference semifinals.

"We need to continue our momentum from last year. Winning is always the goal but we need to enjoy the process as well," said Sutherland.

Returnees highlighting the 2023 roster include middle blocker Tiffany Paalman, setter Calli Gentry, and outside hitter Cora Behnke. The Phoenix added Little Chute native Hannah Vanden Berg, who moves closer to home after transferring from Marquette.

Similar to the previous year, Green Bay will open its season by participating in several invitationals.

"The preseason is really meant to set up to help prepare us before conference play starts," said Sutherland. "I'm excited for our home tournament because it will be really competitive with top mid-majors coming in."

RUMBLE IN THE ROCKIES
After visiting Loyola Chicago on August 19 for the squad's lone exhibition game, GB will head west for a three-game tournament in Laramie, Wyoming, which takes place August 25-26. The Phoenix will battle South Dakota State, Winthrop, and Wyoming (tournament host). It'll be a homecoming for Danilynn Schell, who is from Casper, Wyoming.

"It's important that we provide a memorable and unique student-athlete experience," said Sutherland. "We are really excited about Wyoming!".

CLEMSON INVITATIONAL
GB begins the month of September on the east coast for the Clemson Invitational, where the Phoenix will face the Tigers, Western Carolina, and South Alabama. The tournament runs September 1-2. "It's always neat to compete against a power five school," commented Sutherland. "It makes our fans excited."

UND CLASSIC
The Phoenix will have just under a week to prep for the UND Classic (Sept. 7-9). GB will cross the Mississippi and clash against Montana, North Dakota, and New Mexico.

GREEN BAY INVITE
Green Bay will finally play in front of their home fans when they host the Green Bay Invite from September 14-16. The Phoenix will welcome South Dakota, St. Thomas, Central Michigan, and Illinois State to the Kress Center. The tournament begins a six-game homestand for the team.

Upon the end of the tournament, Purdue Fort Wayne (Sept. 22) and IUPUI (Sept. 23) will come to Titletown to officially begin Horizon League play. Following the contest against the Jaguars, Green Bay will play seven of the next nine on the road.

The Phoenix will return home after an October 21 road contest against Purdue Fort Wayne for a clash against Robert Morris on October 27, which marks the ninth annual Attacking Alzheimer's match. Over the past two seasons, Green Bay Volleyball has raised more than 20,000 dollars to bring awareness to a disease with no cure. Head coach Abbey Sutherland began the Attacking Alzheimer's match in 2014 after her mother, Rhonda Sutherland, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's.

GB will visit Northern Kentucky on November 3 before traveling north to face Wright State on Nov. 4. Green Bay will wrap up the regular season with home contests against Oakland (Nov. 10) and Cleveland State (Nov. 11).

The Horizon League tournament begins on November 19.
