Phoenix Battles Hard, Draws Boston College on Labor Day

NEWTON, Mass. – Fresh off their most dominant victory in nearly a decade, the Green Bay men's soccer team went out east to battle ACC school Boston College. Despite numerous chances for each team, the Phoenix and Eagles tied 0-0. Monday's contest marked the first matchup between the two institutions.

The draw moved Green Bay's record to 2-1-1 overall, while Boston College also moved to 2-1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a sluggish start on offense for both squads, with no shots tallied until Jake Parish's laser in the 18th minute. His shot found the bottom right corner of the goal, but Eagles goalkeeper Brennan Klein was able to record his first save of the night.

Boston College would eventually get their first shot of the contest in the 21st minute, thanks to Marco Dos Santos, but it sailed wide. Josh Johansen played a big role in GB's first-half offense, tallying three shots. The Phoenix fired five shots in the final 5:25 of the half, but Boston College stood their ground, keeping the game knotted at 0-0 going into halftime. Myles Sophanavong nearly cashed in on a free kick, but it went too high and wide left. GB had significantly more pressure on BC in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Eagles 9-3.

BC began the half by nearly finding the back of the net in the 60th minute. Alfie Hughes tried sending it to the top left corner, but Tobias Jahn made a great save to keep the game scoreless. Green Bay began the final 45 minutes on a different note, as they rattled off six shots in the first 18:35, but it resulted in just one shot on goal.

Both teams buckled down on defense, with just five combined shots recorded over the last 22 minutes of the game. Boston College's last attempt occurred in the 80th minute when Xavier O'Neil's shot sailed right. In the 83rd minute, Keegan Walker weaved his way through a couple of Eagles and unleashed a shot that missed. Neither team had much of an opportunity in the remaining 7:44, ending in a 0-0 draw.

GAME NOTES

  • Each team had two shots on goal and one yellow card.
  • Green Bay goalkeeper Tobias Jahn has not allowed a goal in three consecutive games. He last surrendered a score in the 61st minute against Memphis on August 24.
  • GB racked up six corner-kick opportunities, while the Eagles had three.
  • Each goalkeeper tallied two saves.
