GREEN BAY, Wis. – Welcome back to another edition of Phoenix Weekly, presented by Capital Credit Union! Both Green Bay soccer teams are in action this weekend at Aldo Santaga Stadium. Green Bay women's soccer has matches on Thursday and Sunday, and GB men's soccer is home on Saturday.
WEEK IN REVIEW
MEN'S SOCCER
Green Bay men's soccer dropped its lone match of the week, losing to Purdue Fort Wayne 2-0 in its Horizon League road opener. PFW struck early on Abe Arellano's goal in the 10
th minute. Tommy Coughlin and Andrew Paolucci each struck shots saved by the Mastodons in the next minute. Brandon Nunez found Felipe Medina who doubled their lead and secure the 2-0 win for Purdue Fort Wayne.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Phoenix women's soccer team tied Wright State and lost to Northern Kentucky in two HL road matches this past week.
Last Thursday, Green Bay tied Wright State 0-0. The Raiders outshot GB 12-10 including 9-6 in shots on goal. Senah Hanes led the Phoenix with two shots on goal for the match. Mallorie Benhart finished with eight saves.
On Sunday, Northern Kentucky downed the Phoenix 3-1. NKU's Meghan Belrose put the Norse on the board with a 1-0 lead in the 27
th minute. The Norse added on in the second half with two more goals in the 52
nd and 56
th minute. GB's Lilly Lambird then found Ryann Hafenbrak for her first goal of the 2024 season in the game's 78
th minute.
VOLLEYBALL
Green Bay volleyball dropped three home matches in the Capital Credit Union Classic this past weekend falling to Minnesota, St. Thomas, and North Dakota.
On Thursday, GB fell to Minnesota in three sets (16-25, 21-25, 20-25). Katie Schulz led the team with eight kills, Calli Gentry had 19 assists, and Abby Gardner brought in 14 digs.
On Friday, the Phoenix fell short to St. Thomas in five sets (15-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-13, 12-15). Kirsten Fish put down a career-high 15 kills and Cora Behnke also had 15 kills to lead the offensive attack for GB.
On Saturday, GB lost in straight sets to North Dakota (18-25, 19-25, 22-25). Schulz led the Phoenix with nine kills and Emma Johnson had a team-high 26 assists.
MEN'S GOLF
It was a strong showing at the Zach Johnson Invitational hosted by Drake for the Green Bay men's golf team, finishing seventh out of 14 teams. Freshman
Mason Haupt once again led the Phoenix individually, finishing tied for 11th place with a 214 (+1) across the event's three rounds.
Fellow freshman
Brett Wieland wasn't far behind Haupt, finishing tied for 17th with a 216 (+3) overall.
Logan Pechinski,
Trent Meyer, and
Yinta Yang rounded out the Phoenix five with scores of 219 (+6), 222 (+9), and 228 (+15) respectively.
A LOOK AHEAD
MEN'S SOCCER
The Phoenix men's soccer team hosts Cleveland State this Saturday at 1 p.m. for Soktoberfest. The Vikings are 2-3-3 this season and 0-1-1 in the Horizon League. CSU has three different players with two goals this season.
Green Bay's Chris Album is tied for fifth in the league with four goals and Andrew Paolucci is tied for third in assists with three.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Green Bay women's soccer hosts Detroit Mercy on Thursday at 7 p.m. for Hispanic Heritage Night. Detroit Mercy sits atop the Horizon League at 2-0 and is 4-6 overall. Erica Toupin is tied for first in the HL with five goals this season. On Sunday, the Phoenix hosts Oakland at 1 p.m. The Golden Grizzlies are 1-1 in the HL and 2-7-2 overall this season. Frankie Mudd leads Oakland in goals this season with four.
Green Bay's Senah Hanes is tied for third in the HL with four goals, and Laney Stark is tied for second at three assists.
VOLLEYBALL
The Green Bay volleyball team starts Horizon League play this weekend with two road matches at Youngstown State. The Penguins are 5-6 this season going into HL play. Abbie Householder is fourth in the league averaging 3.79 kills per set.
Green Bay's Cora Behnke is ninth in the Horizon League averaging 2.82 kills per set. Abby Gardner is tenth in digs per set at 3.52. Calli Gentry is sixth in the HL averaging 7.95 assists per set.
GOLF
Men's golf will be
right back in action next weekend at the Badger Fall Invitational from Sept. 29 - Oct. 1. The event will be hosted at University Ridge Golf Course, with 18-hole rounds being played each of the three days.
The women's golf team will also be in action next week on Sept. 30 – Oct. 1 at the Rocket Classic hosted by Toledo at Catawba Island Golf Course.
