ROCHESTER, Mich. – Another day, another win for the Green Bay women's basketball team as the Phoenix extended its winning streak to 15 in a row. It's the longest win streak since the 2012-13 season when GB ripped off 24 straight victories.
Green Bay matched the fewest points it has given up this season, which occurred three other times (vs. Parkside, vs. Oakland, vs. Robert Morris).
The Phoenix (22-5, 15-1) dominated all night long, getting 15 points from Cassie Schiltz. Natalie McNeal flirted with a double-double (12 pts., 8 rebs. (team-high)) while Callie Genke and Jenna Guyer each tallied 11 points. Maddy Schreiber tacked on eight more points off the bench. Of the 11 Phoenix that stepped onto the hardwood Thursday night, only one (Miah Meyer) did not score. Sophie Lahti got into the action late with a bucket, Ellie Buzzelle drilled a couple of field goals, and Meghan Schultz added four points, three assists, and two blocks.
McNeal will head into Saturday's game at Detroit Mercy needing 11 points to achieve 1,000 as a Phoenix after scoring her 1,000th point combined between Saint Louis and GB earlier this season.
The Golden Grizzlies (8-16, 6-9 HL) failed to have anyone reach double figures, largely in part because of fantastic Green Bay defense. Kylie Buckley's eight points led Oakland, while Macy Smith and Jasmine Dupree-Hebert each had six points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay stormed out to a 19-4 lead behind threes from Genke and Schiltz. After missing her first attempt from deep, Genke splashed three triples in a row, helping GB's lead grow to 15 early on. Kondrakiewicz added a layup just before the first-quarter buzzer, putting Green Bay up by two touchdowns at 21-7 going into the second quarter. The Green and White continued to pile on in the second frame, surrendering just eight points as the Golden Grizzlies shot 3-for-9 overall. McNeal and Guyer became a dynamic duo, combining to score 14 consecutive points for GB. The lead blew open to 24 by halftime, with the Phoenix in full control, up 39-15.
The Phoenix put an early dagger into the Golden Grizzlies, with Schiltz burying three treys within the first 3:03 of the second half, blowing the game open to a 50-17 score. Green Bay led by 40 (61-21) heading into the fourth quarter and never looked back in a dominant 75-39 victory.
