GREEN BAY, Wis. – After back-to-back Horizon League Championship appearances, Green Bay Volleyball head coach Abbey Sutherland has agreed to a contract extension that will keep her in Green Bay through the 2029-30 season. In Sutherland's seven years leading the Phoenix, GB has finished in the top four six times.
"Abbey has done an excellent job leading Green Bay volleyball and we are thrilled that she will continue to lead this program long into the future," said Director of Athletics, Josh Moon. "Not only has she established a culture of consistent winning on the court, but she and her teams have led the way with community outreach and engagement throughout the region. We are fortunate to be able to have Abbey's leadership in our department and we are excited to watch the continued RISE of Phoenix volleyball!"
Sutherland has amassed wins with the Phoenix like few before her, with three of GB's six 20+ win seasons coming during her tenure. She passed the 100-win mark with Green Bay this past season and sits with a current record of 115-92. Her win total is second in Green Bay coaching history behind Debbie Kirch, who totaled 174 wins in 16 seasons.
It's been a joy to be part of Green Bay Volleyball since 2018, and I'm so proud of the legacy we are building together," added Sutherland. "I am grateful to continue this journey with Green Bay Volleyball. This isn't just a job—it's a purpose. It's home."
Sutherland came to the Phoenix after spending the previous five seasons at nearby UW-Stevens Point, where she led the Pointers to a 146-36 record during her successful tenure. Under Sutherland's leadership, UWSP appeared in consecutive NCAA Final Fours. In what was considered to be a rebuilding year in 2017, Sutherland led the Pointers to 24 wins with a very young team. In 2016, UWSP amassed 27 wins behind four experienced seniors and Sutherland's guidance. Prior to UWSP, Sutherland spent three seasons as head coach at the University of Southern Mississippi. She compiled a 44-47 record after taking over the program in 2010.
She continued, "Thank you to Josh Moon and Chancellor Alexander for your trust and support of our program's mission. Green Bay Volleyball is about more than the game. It's about developing female leaders who are resilient, confident, and brave. It is about connection and making a difference in our community. Green Bay Volleyball is on the rise, and it is a privilege to keep leading this incredible group of women. My commitment is to the continued growth of our program and the women within it."
She enjoyed a standout playing career at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, where she racked up 4,554 assists, 1,503 digs, and 128 aces. She helped SNC finish first in the Midwest Conference in 2002 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
