GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay women's soccer team
remained unbeaten on its home field Friday night with a 2-0 win over Youngstown
State in its homecoming game. The Phoenix improves to 3-8-2 (1-2-1 Horizon
League) with the win, while the Penguins drop to 3-7-2 (0-3-0 Horizon League).
"It was a good win tonight. It's great to stay unbeaten
at home," Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren said. "I thought we did some nice
things in terms of possessing the ball and getting off some decent shots. We
could have been a little tidier at times and taken some more quality shots, but
overall I thought we did a nice job."
The Phoenix got a big night from freshman midfielder
Mikayla Clark (Eden Prairie, Minn.), who scored her first career goal and also
tallied an assist.
After a scoreless opening period, the Phoenix got on the
board in the 64th minute when Clark fired a long shot that was knocked down by
YSU goalkeeper Mariah Snyder, but then slid between her legs and slowly rolled
into the net.
Green Bay added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when
Clark found fellow freshman Lauren Somers (Bloomington, Minn.) for a header in
the box off a free kick. It was Somers' second goal of the season.
Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) also
had a solid performance, making four saves en route to her second shutout of
the year.
Green Bay outshot the Penguins 16-10 in the contest. Freshman
forward Nicole Dooher (New Hope, Minn.) led the Phoenix, blasting a career-high
seven shots, including three shots on goal.
Green Bay continues its three-match home stand Sunday
when it hosts Cleveland State at noon.
