Green Bay Falls to Milwaukee on Senior Night, 4-1

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay women's soccer team (4-10-3, 2-3-2 HL) was defeated 4-1 in its regular season finale by in-state conference rival Milwaukee (10-5-3, 8-0-0 HL) Monday night at a cold, muddy Santaga Stadium. It was Senior Night for the Phoenix, as Meghan McKenzie (Green Bay, Wis.), Liz Metzler (Grayslake, Ill.) and Amanda Stinson (Green Bay, Wis.) were each honored before the game.

The Panthers controlled the contest, scoring three first half goals. Milwaukee outshot the Phoenix 27-6 in the match, including an 18-1 advantage in the opening period.

Milwaukee struck early when senior midfielder Kate Megna tallied her third goal of the season from the left side of the box following a long pass from sophomore Sarah Hagan in the ninth minute. In the 26th minute, junior Sarah Talbert fired a long shot from 40 yards out that got past Green Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) in the right side of the net. Less than eight minutes later, Keara Thompson hammered home a goal from point blank range to give the Panthers a three-goal lead heading into the half.

Milwaukee came out strong in the second stanza, as sophomore forward Sammy Vovos netted her second goal of the season in the 49th minute. Menga found sophomore Makenzie Gillaspie in the box, who passed it off her head to Vovos, who headed it in the net without the ball ever touching the ground.

The Phoenix got on the board in the 81st minute with a penalty kick goal from freshman Lauren Somers (Bloomington, Minn.). Following a Milwaukee hand ball, Somers drove the ball into the top right corner of the goal, past the hands of goalkeeper Leslie Deebach.

Deebach recorded a pair of saves in the contest en route to her third win of the season. Drusch hauled in eight saves in 45 minutes of play for the Phoenix, while freshman Aliena Debelak (New Brighton, Minn.) had four stops in the second period.

Despite the loss, the Phoenix has secured the No. 6 seed in the 2009 Horizon League Tournament. Green Bay will take on third-seeded Valparaiso this Sunday in opening round action.
