GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Phoenix opened the 2009-10 season Saturday night with a 77-52 exhibition victory over Minnesota Duluth at the Resch Center. With the win, the Phoenix moved to 15-0 all time under head coach Tod Kowalczyk in preseason games.
Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) paced the Phoenix with a game-high 20 points. Thirteen came in the second half when Green Bay's offense kicked into high gear. Green Bay led by just four, 28-24, at intermission but tallied 49 in the second stanza to cruise to victory.
The Phoenix limited the Bulldogs to just 26.8 percent shooting from the field (15-for-56) and won the rebounding battle 45-30.
Nine players saw at least 15 minutes of action for the Phoenix and none played more than 25. In addition, 10 players reached the scoring column. Both teams were outstanding at the line, as Green Bay connected on 24 of 29 (.828) tries, while UMD went 15-for-16 (.938).
Troy Cotton (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Troy Snyder (Bolingbrook, Ill.) each added nine points for the Phoenix. Matt Smith (Whitewright, Texas) and Randy Berry (Plover, Wis.) both had game highs with seven rebounds.
Green Bay completes its exhibition slate next Saturday night against St. Norbert. The game, which tips at 7:30 p.m., will be the first ever played by the men at the Kress Center on the UW-Green Bay campus.
