GREEN BAY, Wis. - Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) equaled his career high with a 29-point effort as the Green Bay Phoenix (7-2, 1-0 Horizon League) raced past the Loyola Ramblers (4-2, 0-1) by a 90-69 count Thursday in the league opener for both teams. Green Bay is off to its best nine-game start since the 1991-92 team also opened with a 7-2 mark.
Fletcher made 4 of 7 3-point tries for the Phoenix, which nailed 11 of 21 attempts (52.4 percent) on the evening. It was the fourth time this season that Green Bay made double-figure threes. Green Bay also shot better than 50 percent from the field as a whole (33 of 64, .516).
Green Bay poured in 49 first-half points to secure a 23-point advantage at intermission and never trailed after a Fletcher 3-pointer 16 seconds into the contest. The 90 points were the most scored by the Phoenix in a Horizon League game since a 90-84 overtime win over UIC on Jan. 11, 2006.
Troy Cotton (Milwaukee, Wis.) totaled 17 points, while the third starting guard, Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 12 while dishing out six assists. Fletcher had five assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Matt Smith (Whitewright, Texas) had the best game of his freshman season with a career-best eight points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.
Ten players saw double-figure minutes in the game, as the Phoenix led by as many as 28 in the contest. Three of the previous four games in the series had been decided by six points or less.
The Phoenix plays the middle game of its three-game home stand Saturday night against UIC. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
