MADISON, Wis. - The Green Bay women's soccer team (0-1-0)
suffered a 1-0 loss in double overtime in Friday night's season opener against the
Wisconsin Badgers (1-1-1) at McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison. It marked the
second time in as many years the Phoenix played its in-state rivals to a
one-goal contest. The Badgers move to 14-0-0 all time against the Phoenix with
the victory.
Wisconsin's Taryn Francel scored the game winner in the
second overtime after a knockdown off a corner kick in front of the goal. Wisconsin
dominated the Phoenix in corners, as the Badgers had 23 to Green Bay's
three.
Goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) had a solid
game between the posts for the Phoenix, as the sophomore recorded six saves
before allowing the score in double overtime. The Badgers fired 21 shots in the
match, while the Phoenix managed six.
Leading the Phoenix on the offensive end was freshman midfielder
Megan Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.), who had two shots, including a shot on goal.
The two teams not only battled each other, but the
weather as well. The match was delayed for more than an hour in the second half
due to heavy rain and lightning.
The Phoenix continues its five-match road trip to begin
the 2009 season on Sunday when it travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take on the
Northern Iowa Panthers at 1 p.m. CT. Green Bay's home opener is on Sept. 13
when it hosts North Dakota State at Santaga Stadium.
