CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Green Bay women's soccer team
fought its way to a 2-2 double overtime tie against Eastern Illinois Sunday
afternoon at a rainy Lakeside Field. It was the first draw of 2009 for the
Phoenix (2-5-1) and the third for the Panthers (3-3-3).
EIU got on the scoreboard first when Rachel Hamilton
fired a long shot from 30 yards that bounced over the head of Green Bay
goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) in the fourth minute. It was Hamilton's
third goal of the season.
The Phoenix responded in the 36th minute when freshman
Devahn Godfrey (Maplewood, Minn.) knocked in her first collegiate goal from
close range following a corner kick. Assisting on the play were two other
freshmen, Mikayla Clark (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Lauren Somers (Bloomington,
Minn.).
Sophomore midfielder Corey Arno (Winneconne, Wis.) put
the Phoenix ahead in the second half with her third goal of the season in the 54th
minute. Senior defender Liz Metzler (Grayslake, Ill.) found Arno who hit the
back of the net from the left side of the box, just inside the right post.
The score was knotted up for good in the 62nd minute when
Ashley Streid drove home her third goal of the year from 10 yards after a great
lead pass from Danielle Flynn.
Green Bay outshot the Panthers 22-9 in the match and also
held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Phoenix got off three shots in
overtime, including two on goal, but couldn't find the net for the win.
The Phoenix returns to action Tuesday when it hosts
Loyola in the Horizon League opener at 7 p.m. at Santaga Stadium.
