DAYTON, Ohio - The Green Bay (5-0-2, 1-0-0) men's
soccer team continued with their winning ways Friday as they opened up
conference play with a 4-1 win over Wright State (1-4-0, 0-0-1).
"We had a
solid performance from our guys tonight getting us off to a good, positive start
in the Horizon League," said head coach Tom Poitras.
It took the
Phoenix just over four minutes before they scored their first goal. Senior
Tyler Rosenberg (Grafton, Wis.) passed to David Prochazka (Gothenburg, Sweeden)
who found Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.) from ten yards out on a crossing pass in
the box. Walls used his head to score what was his second goal of the season,
giving the Phoenix the early 1-0 lead.
Less than
20 minutes later, David Znaty (Hadera, Israel) passed the ball behind a
defender to Stuart Grable (Neenah, Wis.) from ten yards out on the right side.
Grable put it between the posts for his first goal of the season, giving Green
Bay the 2-0 lead at the break.
Half way
through the second period Green Bay struck again. Prochazka passed to JC Banks
(Milwaukee, Wis.) who used his footwork to beat the defense and score his
League leading eighth goal of the season.
With an
assuring 3-0 lead and just over 13 minutes to play, off a corner kick Prochazka
found Tony Patterson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) inside the box for the goal. It
was Patterson's second goal of the season while Prochazka's assist was a game
high third in the contest, tying him with a team high four on the year.
"Our
well-balanced attack came to fruition tonight in both the goals and assists. It
was a great team performance," said Poitras.
With Green
Bay's third shutout of the season less than two minutes away, Wright State
scored on a header from Jason Kercher eight yards out, posting the final score of
4-1 on the board.
The Phoenix
has yet to be beaten on the road this season and is off to its best start since
1977. They will try to continue their winning ways as they travel to Butler on
Sunday.
