VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Green Bay women's soccer team fell
2-0 on the road Friday afternoon to Horizon League foe Valparaiso in front of
118 spectators at Eastgate Field. The Phoenix drops to 2-6-2 (0-1-1 Horizon
League) with the loss, while the Crusaders improve to 4-6-0 (1-1-0 Horizon
League) on the year.
After a scoreless first period, the Crusaders got on the
board in the 67th minute with a goal from freshman midfielder Rachel Hoaglin,
her third of the season. Classmate Janine Lytle found Hoaglin in the box on a
cross, who struck the back of the net from five yards out.
Another Valpo freshman, Luisa Desario, also tallied her
third goal of the year when she redirected a clear from Phoenix goalkeeper
Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) at the edge of the box in the 87th minute.
The Crusaders outshot Green Bay 14-6 in the match, with
an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Valparaiso also held a 9-0 advantage in
corner kicks.
Leading the Phoenix offense was freshman midfielder Megan Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.), who fired three shots, including two shots on goal. Desario
and senior Jackie
Kondratko led the Crusaders with four shots apiece.
Valpo senior goalkeeper Mele Cabral made a pair of saves
en route to her third shutout of the season. Drusch made six stops while playing
all 90 minutes between the posts for the Phoenix.
Green Bay has two matches remaining in its three-game
road trip, starting Sunday at Butler at noon. The Phoenix then heads to
Lincoln, Neb., next Friday to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 4 p.m. before
returning to Santaga Stadium to take on Youngstown State Oct. 9.
