BROOKINGS, S.D. - The
Green Bay women's soccer team (1-2-0) dropped a 1-0 decision to South Dakota
State Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park in the third of a five-match road
trip to start the 2009 season. The Jackrabbits, who made a run to the NCAA
College Cup last year, earned their first victory of new campaign, improving to
1-3-1.
"We didn't play our best," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren
said. "These are the types of growing pains you go through as a young team. We
had some good chances to score and just didn't take advantage of the
opportunities."
The Jackrabbits outshot the Phoenix 25-6 in the contest,
however most of the shots were from long range and did not threaten the goal.
SDSU junior Kaitlin Justice scored the lone goal of the match - her first of
the season - after beating Green Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) in
the 58th minute in a one-on-one situation. Junior midfielder Tory Schiltgen assisted
on the game-winner.
Justice and junior forward Emily Quigley tied for the match high
with four shots apiece, while Green Bay junior Chelsea Lyons (Coon Rapids,
Minn.) led the offensive attack for the Phoenix, firing a pair of shots on
goal.
Lyons had an opportunity late to tie the game in a
one-on-one, but SDSU goalie Brienna Rogers made a great stop to keep the
Phoenix off the board. It was one of Rogers' three saves in the contest. Drusch
made a season-high seven saves in the match for Green Bay, including six in the
first half.
The Phoenix wraps up its long road trip next week with
matches at Iowa State on Sunday and Marquette on Thursday. The contest against
the Golden Eagles will be broadcast live on Time Warner Sports 32 at 7 p.m.
