Green Bay Sweeps Chicago State in Dominant Fashion

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In a dominant win, all 16 Phoenix players saw action and 12 recorded kills as Green Bay (5-11) defeated Chicago State 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-11) in non-conference volleyball action Thursday night at the Kress Events Center.

"It is always fun to have everyone get playing time, especially at home," said head coach Debbie Kirch. "I thought not only did everyone get to play, but everyone came in ready to go and contributed. This was a good match to build on as we host two Horizon League opponents this weekend."

The Phoenix jumped out early in set one and never looked back. The Phoenix led 17-7 after a kill by junior Kelly Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.) and extended the lead to as many as 11 at 22-11 on an ace by freshman Sabrina Marunowski (Milwaukee, Wis.). Junior Abbey Gitter's (Hortonville, Wis.) fourth kill of the set won it for Green Bay at 25-15. With six different players recording kills, the Phoenix hit .357 with 15 kills in the opening set.

Sophomore Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.) had three early kills in set two to spark the Phoenix to an early 5-2 lead. After a Cougar rally, sophomore Leah Van Zeeland (Kaukauna, Wis.) and junior Alison Bohnen (St. Germain, Wis.) capped a 4-0 run with a block to make it 12-8.

Green Bay scored eight of the final nine points in the second set, ending the set on a Van Zeeland kill 25-15. Leitermann had five kills alone in the second set while Bohnen and Van Zeeland had three apiece in their first set of action, helping the Phoenix to 15 kills and a .344 hitting percentage.

An ace from sophomore Brittany Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) made the lead 8-1 and forced a timeout early in set three. The lead reached 10-1 before the Cougars dented the scoreboard again. A Groth kill stretched the lead to 22-8 late in the set and the Phoenix closed it out 25-11.

The team hit .452 in the third set, notching 16 kills to only two errors. Green Bay had 46 kills and hit .385 for the match, with senior Whitney Schott (Roscoe, Ill.) directing the offense with 33 assists.

Groth added a team-high 19 digs to help the Phoenix defense, which held the Cougars to a hitting percentage of .048 for the match. Van Zeeland notched five blocks while Bohnen added a pair.

With the victory, Green Bay improved to 17-0 all-time against the Cougars.

Green Bay will return to Horizon League play Friday for the middle contest of the three-game homestand, welcoming Loyola to the Kress Events Center at 7 p.m. The Phoenix hosts Valparaiso Saturday at 4 p.m.
