MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-8-3, 0-4-1
Horizon League) dropped a hard-fought battle against in-state rival Milwaukee (8-5-2,
4-1-0 Horizon League) Friday night. The Panthers scored the lone goal in the 100th
minute of action.
The
Phoenix went into the match with a defensive mindset, attempting to contain
junior forward Sarah Hagan and Milwaukee's high-scoring offense.
"I'm
really proud of the way the girls played tonight against a very talented
Milwaukee team," Phoenix head coach Trevor
Warren said. "It was a gutsy performance, we stuck to our game plan and we
were very close to sending it to the second overtime period."
Milwaukee
junior Keara Thompson scored the game-winner just seconds before the first
overtime period ended following a cross on a free kick from senior Nicole
Sperl. Hagan led the Panthers with a game high eight shots, including three on
goal.
Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) kept Green Bay within striking
distance throughout the night. Drusch saved a total of nine Panther shots, as
Milwaukee outshot the Phoenix 27-4.
Green Bay is back in action
on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at Loyola.
