CHICAGO (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Sophomore Lauren Somers (Bloomington, Minn.) headed in the game-winner in the 81st minute Tuesday night to give the Green Bay women's soccer team (3-8-3, 1-4-1 Horizon League) a 2-1 victory over Loyola (6-11-1, 4-3-1 Horizon League) at the Loyola Soccer Park. It marked the first conference win of the season for Green Bay.

"It was great to get a result like this on the road," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "Loyola is a very good team that is near the top of the conference and they're always a tough team to play. We did a good job of finishing our chances tonight and finally had a little bit of luck."

With the score knotted at 1-1 and overtime looming, freshman defender Hekla Palmadottir struck a well-placed corner kick at the 80:22 mark. The pass found the head of Somers, who buried it past junior goalkeeper Katie Groesch to give the Phoenix the ultimate 2-1 advantage. It was Somers' first goal of the season and Palmadottir's third assist of 2010.

While the late goal by Somers gave Green Bay the win, it was an early goal that got the Phoenix off to a fast start. Sophomore Chanel Aries (Calgary, Alberta) found the back of the net in just the seventh minute of action to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 advantage. Aries gathered a rebound following a corner kick by Palmadottir and redirected a shot past the keeper at the far post. It was Aries' first collegiate score and the team's first goal since winning 4-0 over Northern Iowa on September 10.

"It was nice to get a goal early," Warren said. "We had been struggling offensively and that goal really took some of the pressure off."

The Ramblers tied things up in 57th minute when sophomore Kristin Papierski floated a 30-yard shot from straight on, which sailed just over the hands of Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) and into the net at the right post. Loyola senior Ashley Funk registered the assist on the score.

After the Somers goal in the 81st, the Ramblers managed four shots in the final nine minutes, but nothing that threatened the goal.

Green Bay was outshot 19-7 in the contest, as Papierski fired a game-high four shots for Loyola. Aries led the Phoenix with three shots, while Somers shot twice. Drusch made six saves in the match while surrendering just her 11th goal of the season.

Green Bay wraps up its three-match Horizon League road trip on Friday when it travels to Wright State. The Phoenix then returns home for its regular season finale on Sunday against Detroit. Green Bay is fighting for one of six spots in the Horizon League tournament.
