MADISON, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - It took six extra minutes for the Green Bay (8-4-1,
3-2-0 HL) men's soccer team to beat in-state rival Wisconsin (1-10-2, 0-2-1 Big
Ten) 4-3 in overtime Wednesday night.
"It's always important to win in-state rivalry games," said
head coach Tom Poitras. "Our team showed a lot of character coming from behind
to get the win."
Green Bay got on the board first at the 8:53 mark when
Stuart Grable (Neenah, Wis.) found Dan Krueger (Fridley, Minn.) in the corner
of the box for his first goal of the season. The assist was Grable's second in
as many games as the Phoenix had the 1-0 lead.
The Badgers answered 20 minutes later when Chris Prince
found the back of the net to knot the contest 1-1 at the half.
Green Bay outshot Wisconsin 5-3 in the first half and had an
8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Sam Krenzien
(Wauwatosa, Wis.) found Krueger for his second goal of the game to give Green
Bay the 2-1 advantage. The goal was Krueger's third career goal and Krenzien's
third assist on the season.
"Dan has started the past couple of games for us and been
working hard. It definitely showed tonight," said Poitras.
The Badgers scored off a free kick in the 68th minute to tie
the game before Prince tallied his second goal in the 74th minute to give
Wisconsin the 3-2 lead.
In the 80th minute, Tony Patterson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.)
found Krenzien from the end line for his third goal of the season and the 3-3
tie.
In the remaining 10 minutes of regulation the Phoenix fired three
shots, two on goal, as Wisconsin shot once before time expired to send the game
into overtime.
The Phoenix outshot the Badgers 8-4 and 4-0 on corner kicks
in the second period.
In the 96thminute, senior JC Banks (Milwaukee,
Wis.) got behind a Wisconsin defender and beat goalkeeper Max Jentsch one on
one to score the unassisted goal and give Green Bay the 4-3 win. The goal was
Banks sixth in the past four games and second overtime goal of the season.
"JC has a great understanding of where to get into spots
where he's not seen," commented Poitras.
Banks led all players with five shots as Green Bay outshot
Wisconsin 16-8 and had eight corner kicks compared to the Badgers' one.
The win was Green Bay's second consecutive win over the
Badgers since the 2002 and 2003 seasons. "It's a good sign for our program that
we're able to beat Wisconsin two years in a row. It definitely gives us
momentum heading back into league play," said Poitras.
Green Bay will host Valparaiso (7-6-2, 1-4-0 HL) Saturday at
7 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
