GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-7-2, 0-3-0 Horizon League)
was defeated 3-0 by Butler (4-9-0, 2-1-0 Horizon League) Friday night at
Santaga Stadium. Prior to Friday, the Phoenix had not allowed more than a
single goal in any game this season.
"We
ran into a good team tonight," Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren said.
"Butler was quite possibly the best team we've seen all year. I can't be
disappointed in the effort the girls put in, but the quality was just lacking
against a good team."
The Bulldogs finished the match
with a 17-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Several
of Butler's scoring chances resulted from an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Butler got on the board in the
33rd minute when freshman Jackie Hafele headed the ball past Phoenix goalkeeper
Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) following a well-placed corner by senior
defender Sarah Phelps. Butler took five corner kicks in the first period,
leading to three shots on goal.
"They caused us a lot of
problems, especially on the corner kicks," Warren said. "They put a lot of
players inside the box and we weren't winning a lot of the headers, and
eventually they broke through."
Nikki Hafele - Jackie Hafele's
sister - scored Butler's second goal in the 66th minute. The freshman fired a
strong shot from 35 yards out to find the left side of the net. Sophomore
forward Rachael Melendez registered the assist.
Butler's third and final goal
came in the 75th minute when Phelps scored on a free kick. The senior struck
the ball over Green Bay's wall of defenders to find the back of the net near
the left post.
Sophomore Lauren Somers
(Bloomington, Minn.) led the Phoenix offense with three shots, including one on
goal. Drusch made five saves in nearly 80 minutes of action for Green Bay.
Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Sturchio (Rochester, Minn.) played the
final 10 minutes between the posts for the Phoenix.
Green Bay is next in action
Sunday when it hosts Valparaiso (5-5-3, 1-2-0 Horizon League) for Parents Day
at noon. The Phoenix will be wearing pink warm-ups Sunday in support of breast
cancer awareness month as part of Green Bay's Compete to Beat initiative.
