Green Bay Drops CBE Classic Opener at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Senior Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) had a team-high 21 points in his return to his hometown, but visiting Green Bay (1-1) was unable to recover from a strong start by Marquette (3-0) and fell to the Golden Eagles 89-69 in the opening game of the CBE Classic for the Phoenix at the Bradley Center.

Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle returned to his alma mater, where he scored 1,690 during his playing career from 1997-2001. The seventh-leading scorer in Marquette history, Wardle was introduced and recognized with applause from the crowd of 13,968 before the game.

Trailing by 20 coming out of the halftime break, Green Bay got a pair of threes from Perine sandwiched around a Steve Baker (St. Paul, Minn.) jumper to cut the lead to 16 and force a timeout from Marquette head coach Buzz Williams. However, the Phoenix had four turnovers in the next four possessions and were unable to get the margin under 15 the rest of the way.

Perine knocked down 6-of-16 shots, including 3-of-6 from long range, and hit 6-of-8 free throws to lead all players in scoring. The senior also had three assists and a steal in 33 minutes of action. He had 12 points in the second half as the Phoenix evened the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard.

After Baker opened the scoring with a layup 37 seconds into the game, Green Bay struggled from the field and missed its next seven shots from the field. Getting eight points from Dwight Buycks, Marquette used an 18-2 run to build a 14-point lead.

Daniel Turner's (McCordsville, Ind.) first collegiate basket cut the deficit to single digits for the Phoenix at the 11:44 mark, but the Golden Eagles used 58.1 percent shooting (18-31) and 13 free throws to build a 20-point halftime lead (53-33).

Baker finished with 11 points and four rebounds for the Phoenix while sophomore Seth Evans (Seneca, ill.) chipped in eight off the Green Bay bench. Senior Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) struggled from the field, hitting 2-of-9 shots, and finished with eight points and four assists. Green Bay freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) had a team-high eight rebounds.

Marquette put six players in double figures and was led by Jae Crowder's 17 points off the bench. Vander Blue added 14 while Buycks finished with 12 points.

Green Bay will continue its participation in the CBE Classic from Saturday through Monday in Oxford, Ohio. The Phoenix will play No. 25 San Diego State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Aztecs defeated No. 11 Gonzaga on the road Tuesday night 79-76.
