OXFORD, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Seniors Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) and Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored a combined 40 points Sunday night,
including 28 in the second half, as visiting Green Bay (2-2) rallied to knock
off Miami University (2-2) 69-65 at Millett Hall in the CBE Classic.
Playing in his 100th career game, Fletcher
scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Phoenix rally, and with
the game tied at 60 with 1:59 to play, Perine scored six-straight points to
give his team the lead for good. The 6-foot-3 Perine was able to bounce back after missing a thunderous dunk attempt moments earlier.
"The basketball gods were on our side, and I believe in them," said head coach Brian Wardle. "Usually when you miss a dunk like that it can turn the other way, but our two senior guards just had a focus and a calmness about them tonight to control the tempo and both of them won the game for us. We had a bunch of guys contribute, but when you have two senior guards out there making plays it helps. Players make plays, and they made plays in that second half."
After
leading by a score of 14-3 early in the contest, Green Bay struggled from the
field throughout the rest of the half and went into the locker room trailing
30-25.
After a 2-for-8 first half shooting performance, Fletcher hit 7-of-8 shots from the field in the second half alone. He added five steals, two assists and two rebounds.
Green
Bay used a 32-23 advantage on the glass to help with the victory and also
knocked down 15-of-21 free throws, including an 8-for-8 effort from Perine.
Freshman
Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) scored 11 points in just 17 minutes of play
while fellow freshman
Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) had seven
points and seven rebounds off the Green Bay bench. The Phoenix played without the services of junior
Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) for the second-straight game.
Green
Bay will wrap up play in the CBE Classic on Monday against IUPUI at 3:30 p.m. The
game, which will be Perine's 100th career game, can be heard in the Green Bay area on WDUZ 107.5 AM/1400 FM with Matt
